Enter to win a free saltwater fishing trip!

This contest will run from April 22 with the winner being drawn on May 20. Our  drawing will be for a spot on a charter with Captain Steven Byrne from First Cast Charters. First Cast Charters specializes in light tackle fishing in the raritan bay. The boat comes out of Great Kills habor, in Staten Island. Great Kills consistently has a large bunker population, in the spring, and we will be live lining these bunker trying to catch the big bass that the bunker schools attract. Captain Byrne holds the state record for weakfish and has grown up fishing these waters. This is an afternoon trip leaving the dock at 4pm. We are hoping to avoid the weekend boat traffic and try to coax the stripers to the surface. The captain is good guy and great fisherman and I guarantee that we will have fun.

Enter to win a free freshwater fishing trip!

Our first freshwater drawing will be for a spot on a fishing trip with legendary Adirondack guide Steven Flint. We will be fishing on Friday May 16 and targeting pre spawn Champlain smallmouth. We had a great trip at this time last year and had many many fish in the 4-5lb class. We will use pointers, x-raps, plastics, and topwater to target these fish. Steven currently works for the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and is a former River Keeper. Steven is also a staff member of Riversmallies.com and has been featured in many TV fishing shows and in magazines. We will meet the winner of the drawing around 6 am Friday morning in the Plattsburg N.Y. area. The details will be finalized in the days prior to the trip to adjust for current weather conditions. The drawing will be held May 1 and the results posted in the newsletter.

Spring stripers & blues with Capt. Allen

I had been exchanging e-mails with Capt Allen of Reel Class Sport fishing from Pt Pleasant during the spring trying to pick a good time to go out with him. I got an e-mail on a Tuesday in May telling me that the striper and blue bite was on fire. I had told Allen that when there is a hot bite my schedule is flexible so I did not want to disappoint and a trip was scheduled for the next day. I also lined up two other fishing buddies, Tom & Chris, for our trip.

We cleared the Manasquan inlet at around 6am and headed north to look for the fish where they had been the day before. We stopped on some working birds several times off the beach but did not mark any fish or have any takers for our jigs. When we got up to the Shrewsbury rocks we did not find any active birds or real good readings. Capt Allen decided that we would troll some bunker spoons while we waited for a change of tide and hopefully for the fish to more…

U.S. Mortgage Rates Will Tumble to Four-Decade Low

(Bloomberg) -- Freddie Mac, the world's second-largest buyer of home loans, said the average U.S. fixed mortgage rate in 2008 probably will tumble more than three-quarters of a percentage point to the lowest in at least 45 years. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage will fall to 5.5 percent from 6.3 percent last year, the McLean, Virginia-based company said in a forecast today. That would be the lowest annual average in records that go back to 1963.
